Who: The Teatro de la Rosa Theater Company
Teatrao de la Rosa was the recipient of back-to-back awards as "Best Arts Experience For Kids" by the Fort Worth Weekly and the listeners of local radio station WRR respectively. In 2005, they were acknowledged by the Kennedy Center as a participant in their capacity building program for ethnic-specific organizations. In 2006, they became a national recipient for the Coming Up Taller Award. They value audience enjoyment and theater education, and offer free teacher's packets and post-performance workshops with seasoned artists to increase understanding and continued learning for participants.
What: School performances and workshops
• In-school performance (45-min) of El Conejito Verde (The Green Rabbit), an old Mexican folktale adapted collaboratively for the stage. This play is designed for Kindergarten through 5th Grade, and is fully bilingual utilizing original music and hand-crafted masks. The performers engage the children by having them help with the magic that moves the story along.
• Actors divide into groups and go into classrooms for up to 12 theatre and language arts-based workshops.
• Students learn about acting and theatre, and perform with the actors in group exercises. They make props such as masks or tortilla wands. They learn about Mexican geography and culture.
• The goal is to encourage imagination, creativity and confidence.
The cost is $750 for a 45-minute in-school performance and up to 12 workshops. You may apply for ticket and transportation subsidy funds to cover this program through Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga. Submit application on September 15.
Copies of a DVD and study guide are available upon request. You can see more of this group on their website.
