The series, which features 12 weeks of independent films each fall and spring, is held at the downtown Majestic 12 through a partnership with Carmike Cinemas. An all-volunteer committee presents the Carmike booking department with a list of films, and representatives work with distributors to book as many films as possible from that selection.
But booking that far in advance can decrease the chances of getting the movies at the top of the committee’s list.
“Distributors are holding onto their films because of all the awards that are being given out,” explains film chairperson Denise Starbird. “They don’t want to release films until later so it makes it hard for us to book farther in advance.”
Starting with the 2011 spring series, Carmike will book only one month (four films) at a time, rather than booking all 12 at the beginning of the series. This revised strategy will allow AEC to book more desirable films in each series.
“This new format will help keep people informed throughout the series, and the community benefits by getting the latest and greatest films that we really would love to see,” says Starbird.

- BARNEY’S VERSION (February 18 – 24)
- ALL GOOD THINGS (February 25 – March 3)
