Tour the World at 11th Annual AEC Culture Fest

Sunday, September 26

The Arts & Education Council (AEC) is gearing up for its 11th annual CULTURE FEST, which will be Sunday, September 26, 2010, at the First Tennessee Pavilion. The free, family festival - which celebrates diversity through the arts - is held in partnership with the Chattanooga Market. Market hours will be extended from 11 AM to 5 PM on that day.

The AEC is planning a full day of activities, including performances on two stages, hands-on demonstrations such as origami and calligraphy, children’s activities and cooking demonstrations. An additional 25 booths featuring international displays, information and food will give the Chattanooga Market a global flair.

For the first time, participants will be able to purchase an AEC Culture Fest cookbook, full of recipes from around the globe, submitted by community members. Sales of the keepsake cookbook will benefit the AEC, a non-profit organization that also produces the Independent Film Series, Conference on Southern Literature, Back Row Film Series and many student outreach programs.

FREE FLAMENCO WORKSHOP

Aztec dancer John Jaramillo, who demonstrated Flamenco dancing at last year’s event, will be a featured performer. In full Aztec regalia, his presentation of Aztec dance and drumming includes several “Warrior Style” dances as well as presentation of the costume and traditional musical instruments in English, Spanish and the Aztec language of Nauatl. A “Friendship Dance” inspired by the powwow “two-step” dance from the North American Plains Indians, will end the program with audience participation.  After Culture Fest, Mr. Jaramillo will conduct a week-long residency at three local schools as part of AEC’s Culture Fest student outreach program. Students will learn about Aztec history and culture through the dances and drum rhythms, and put on their own performance at the end of the workshop.

AEC is seeking vendors and volunteers for the festival. Contact 423-267-1218 or e-mail info@artsedcouncil.org.
