C. VANN WOODWARD is an historian and essayist. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 for Mary Chestnut's Civil War. Other works include Origins of the New South, 1877-1913, The Strange Career of Jim Crow, American Counterpoint, Slavery in the North-South Dialogue, and The Burden of Southern History. He is the general editor of The Oxford History of the United States. |
