The Young Southern Student Writers program allows area students in grades K-12 to submit their own works in prose and poetry for review. Winners receive medals and an anthology of their works in a special ceremony each April.

Since the program's 1999 inception, participation has increased from 500 to 2300, and has grown into an annual event.
