An integral part of the AEC Conference is its student outreach programs. During the 2003 CSL, up to 15 one half day residencies are planned in Hamilton County schools. Books by participating authors will be purchased and provided to classes for students to read and study prior to visits. Careful consideration is given in the selection of schools to include enrichment outreach for inner city and underserved rural schools. Further, the AEC offers the Young Southern Writers’ program. Its purpose is to nurture students’ writing skills, recognize their works, expose them and their families to accomplished Southern writers, and reinforce the importance of the language arts. The program is open to all students in Hamilton County public schools (including home schools) as well as students in north Georgia and Alabama. In 2002, the Young Southern Writers’ program received over 1,500 entries from students.
