PAT C. HOY II

— recipient of the 2003 Fellowship of Southern Writer's Nonfiction Award—directs the Expository Writing Program at New York University where he is a professor of English. A collection of his essays, Instinct for Survival, was selected as a "Notable" collection in The Best American Essays of the Century. Other books include Reading and Writing Essays and The Scribner Handbook for Writers, 3rd edition. His essays and reviews have appeared in Agni, Rhetoric Review, Sewanee Review, South Atlantic Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, and The Wall Street Journal. Eight of these pieces have been selected as "Notable Essays" in The Best American Essays. Hoy was born in Hamburg, Arkansas.
