MARY WARD BROWN

— recipient of the 2003 Fellowship of Southern Writers Hillsdale Prize for Fiction—won the PEN/Hemingway Award in 1987 and the Lillian Smith Award in 1991 for her collection of short stories Tongues of Flame. Her new collection, It Wasn't All Dancing, won the Harper Le Award for 2002. She lives and writes on a farm in the Black Belt of Alabama where she was born in 1917, twenty-one miles southwest of Selma.
