— member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers — was born
and raised in Tennessee. He is the author of 11 novels including Soldier’s
Joy, which received the 1989 Lillian Smith Award. His book All
Souls’ Rising was a 1995 National Book Award finalist and
winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award. Bell has published two collections
of short stories and his most recent book is Anything Goes.
A graduate of Princeton University and Hollins College, he is Director
of the Cratz Center for Creative Writing at Goucher College.
