VANN WOODWARD (1908-1999) was a historian and essayist. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 for Mary Chestnut’s Civil War. Other
works include Origins of the New
South, 1877-1913; The Strange Career of Jim Crow; American Counterpoint:
Slavery in the North-South Dialogue; The Old World’s New World; and The
Burden of Southern History. He
was the general editor of The Oxford
History of the United States. |
