Todd Field works from an Andre Dubus story with devastating
effect, capturing the contrast of placid, middle-class
gentility and the depths of human emotion revealed in the
wake of fateful events. Sissy Spacek, a heavy favorite for
Oscar nomination in her portrayal as mother of the murdered
son, leads an exceptional cast, including Tom Wilkonson
(father) and the surprising Marisa Tomei as the son's older
girlfriend. Field's eye for realism and a quiet moment is
unwavering.
